Healthy Start was a state-funded program at school sites offering physical and mental health services to low-income K-12 students and their families. Responding to a surge in student anxiety and depression — exacerbated by the pandemic — a state commission has called for California schools to move quickly to become “wellness centers” addressing mental and physical health needs among K-12 students and their families. Although CFIR has been used to frame studies testing the implementation of evidence-based programs in schools, a recent systematic review by Cassar et al. highlighted that use has been primarily for interpreting findings, as opposed to guiding study design. Over the last 15 years, the number of school and community based health-intervention programs in the United States has grown. HI schools, on the other hand, may have a greater capacity for LWP implementation due to the support and resources they acquire from informal sources in the community and school system, as well as formal sources within the school, such as designated wellness coordinators, as evidenced in interviews (e.g., PE department chair, health director).

Cost-effective implementation of existing school wellness policy with KiPOW! Was designed to leverage the strengths that each partner can sustainably provide to achieve common goals, and our early experience indicated that the program has been viewed positively by mentors, education stakeholders, and school children alike. We found no significant difference at baseline in age, sex, and BMI percentile between schools in the District of Columbia and Orange County, nor among Orange County intervention and control schools (Table 1). Eight students were absent on data collection days and therefore not available for follow-up, 4 in the District of Columbia and 4 in Orange County.
